The species is named lubbocki in memory of Or Roger Lubbock, the collector of the type material. An unfortunate traffic accident in Brazil prematurely ended his career in ichthyology. Although his professional life spanned relatively few years, Or Lubbock made numerous valuable contributions to the knowledge of reef fish taxonomy.
